Goji berries are the fruits of two related plants, Lycium barbarum and L. chinsense, native to Asia. The same plant genus (Solanaceae) includes potato, tomato, chili pepper, eggplant and tobacco. Goji plants grow up to 3 meters tall and produce fruits with a bright orange-red color and elliptical shape, 1–2 centimeters in diameter. The fresh fruit visually resembles a cherry, enclosing yellow seeds in its flesh. Goji berries ripen from July to October.
