When the scientists added iron during the study, and then “incorporated” it into the lung tissues and in particular into the lung cancer cells, artemisinin selectively attacked the cancer cells without causing damage to healthy cells. “Our results show that artemisinin successfully stops the transcription factor E2F1 and interferes with the process of destroying cancer cells, meaning that it presents a new mode of transcription in which artemisinin controls the process of reproduction and growth of cancer cells”, was the conclusion of research conducted in the Cancer Research Laboratory at the University of California.
