Zea is included among these grains. Zea (triticum dicoccum) is one of the oldest cereals known to man. Its samples have been found in excavations of prehistoric settlements throughout Greece, with the oldest one in Asia Minor dating back to 12,000 years BC. The ancients did not eat wheat bread which they only used as animal feed. Zea contains the amino acid Lysine (Lycin) which strengthens the immune system, helps digestion, easier absorption of calcium and magnesium. The port of “Zea” in Piraeus received its name because of the Zea grain trade that took place in the area in ancient times. The ancients considered Zea very important and nutritious and that is why Alexander the Great fed his army only with it.
