Ginger is the root of which is used in medicine but also as a spice in food or as an exotic delicacy. This species gives its name to the group of plants Zinglberacoro, whose other known members are cardamom (kakoule), turmeric (yellow root), galangal, etc. Ginger cultivation originated in South Asia, but is widespread in East Africa as well as in the Caribbean.
