It has been used since ancient times as a healing plant, while in 1917 it was used for the first time in the treatment of cancer by the anthroposophists Rudolf Steiner and Ita Wegman. For 30 years it has been the most widely used adjuvant in the treatment of cancer in parts of Europe and especially in Germany and Sweden. Extracts of the plant are mainly used as injections. In Germany alone, it is estimated that more than 30 million dollars are spent each year on its medicinal derivatives.

The herb also contains choline and acetylcholine which have a hypotensive effect, viscotoxin (cardioactive polypeptide) and oleic acid which are sedative substances, regulators of heart function and beneficial in nervous disorders. It also contains a saponin glycoside, histamine and antineoplastic (anti-cancer) proteins. Thyme is considered an excellent relaxant and is indicated in many cases by soothing and stimulating the nervous system. It acts directly on the vagus nerve which slows the heart rate, while strengthening the heart muscle and dilating the walls of peripheral capillaries. Thus it works by reducing arterial blood pressure and helps with the symptoms of arteriosclerosis. It is thought that it can also help with nervous tachycardia and that it relieves headaches due to hypertension. Viscose goes well with Hawthorn, Valerian, Honeysuckle and Linden. The decoction of the herb is used by therapists for hysteria, overstimulation, convulsions, dizziness and has a positive effect on the elderly in the loss of strength. Externally it is used in arthritis, neuritis, rheumatism, fleshy veins.
