Originating in Asia, the mandarin (Citrus reticulata) is the sweetest of all citrus fruits. Smaller in size and with a thinner skin, we enjoy it a lot in our country. Its essential oil is mild, sweet and relaxing. It consists of d-lemonin, gamma-terpinene, alpha and beta pinene and myrcene. These active ingredients bring with them many benefits to our health. Mandarin essential oil has traditionally been used in Chinese medicine and Ayurveda to calm the mind, relax the body and facilitate sleep. In modern research, mandarin oil in aromatherapy has been found to have soothing and anti-stress properties. In experiments designed to mimic generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, mandarin oil helped laboratory mice by reducing anxiety symptoms.
