Dittany has antiseptic, tonic and antispasmodic action. It is used to heal wounds, as a sedative of the digestive system, as well as against flu and colds. Dioskourides mentions that in Crete, when the Cretans shot the wild goats and did not manage to kill them but wounded them, they chewed dittany to then lick their wounds and thus heal. It acts as an antispasmodic and helps prevent and treat circulatory and heart problems, relieves headaches, and stomach disorders, toothaches and abscesses. It also acts as an anti-diabetic, emmenagogue but also as an aphrodisiac (in Crete it is also referred to as “lovers”).
