The leaves and especially the bark of the witch hazel, are rich in tannins, flavonoids, phytosterols, sugars and oils. In the form of an extract or infusion, they are used by medicine for their astringent, tonic, anti-hemorrhagic, antiseptic and mild anti-inflammatory properties. A recent study showed that formulations containing witch hazel can have just as good effects as hydrocortisone in treating atopic eczema and psoriasis.
